Volkswagen recently announced that the 2019 Golf GTI earned a Top Safety rating by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The award applies to vehicles with optional front crash prevention and specific headlights

According to IIHS, in order to qualify for a 2019 Top Safety Pick
award, a vehicle must earn good ratings in driver-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraint tests, as well as good or acceptable rating in the passenger-side small overlap front test.

“We are so pleased to receive the IIHS Top Safety Pick award for the GTI,” said Derrick Hatami, Executive Vice President of Sales, Marketing and Aftersales, Volkswagen of America, Inc. “This award demonstrates Volkswagen's longstanding commitment to vehicle safety and the development of innovative technologies.”

The hatchback earned good ratings in five crashworthiness evaluations and a superior rating for front crash prevention. The front crash prevention system avoided collisions in 12 mph and 25 mph track tests and has a forward collision warning component that meets the criteria set by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

In order to protect the driver and the occupants of the vehicle, the Golf GTI provides a combination of both passive and active safety systems. It features six airbags as standard along with a number of electronic safety systems, such as an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Electronic Stability Control (ESC).

The 2019 Golf GTI is offered in four trims: Golf GTI S, Golf GTI Rabbit Edition, Golf GTI SE, and Golf GTI Autobahn.
